Lynn Harbor Park

Location: Lynn, MA
Client: The City of Lynn, The Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs
Status: Phase 1 Completed in Fall 2025

Phase 1 of Lynn Harbor Park, which opened to the public in September 2025, reimagines the use of the newly capped landfill along the Lynn waterfront. BRR was tasked with leading a public engagement process, preparing multiple stages of park design from master planning through construction documentation, and on-site construction observation. Phase 1 of the park features over 20-acres of new parkland on reclaimed land that was previously inaccessible to the public. Years of community engagement, sustained stakeholder support and collaboration, creative permitting and funding strategies, and deeply technical design requirements have culminated in a one-of-a-kind natural and recreational resource.

Phase 1 features over 1.5 miles of new, accessible walking paths that climb approximately 75’ in elevation. Picnic areas, seating zones, and shaded overlooks provide areas of respite and scenic, 360-degree views. An activity terrace features a basketball court, pickleball courts, a performance amphitheater, and sculpted native perennial beds that surround a curvilinear activity lawn. Over 500 native trees and nearly 20-acres of native meadows provide visual interest, shade, and new habitat for local flora and fauna. A comprehensive, custom wayfinding system was designed to guide visitors through the park and share the unique history and evolution of the site. Given that the entire park is sited above a capped landfill, the design required creative solutions and close coordination with the project engineer and contractor.
