Boston Harbor, MA

Spectacle Island is a landfill/park project, part of the Central Artery/Third Harbor Tunnel project. Brown, Richardson & Rowe provided the grading and planting design necessary to stabilize the millions of cubic yards of dredged fill which was transported to the Island from the tunnel excavation. The firm worked with Dr. Phillip Craul, soil scientist, to develop a manufactured topsoil and loam substrate using glacial till, sand, and organic matter such as compost from breweries.

Brown, Richardson & Rowe received an Honor Award from the Boston Society of Landscape Architects for its work on Spectacle Island.

"My wife Martha and I spent a jaw dropping two hours walking around Spectacle Island. It was our first time there and we were amazed at the quality and variety of the planting and the ease of the grades. The views are of course astounding and you wisely let the island landscape serve as frames or backdrops to the views. I especially liked the stone walls - now well covered with vegetation. It is a text book classic example of less is more. . . Brown, Richardson & Rowe, Inc will go down in history as providing Boston with a new island park for us to enjoy." - Richard Heath, Founder of the Franklin Park Coalition. August 3, 2010.
