Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA
Brown, Richardson & Rowe, Inc., re-designed Beach and Summer Street's sidewalks for the town’s Downtown Improvement Project. The firm worked with Rizzo Associates, a multidisciplinary engineering firm, to prepare a beautiful, practical and durable design that is appropriate to Manchester-by-the-Sea.
This charming year-round and seasonal community has a busy and attractive town center. The two streets in the 1/3-mile project area, Beach and Summer Streets, are critical links within the downtown and to the Harbor and the commuter rail station.
The streetscape improvements were completed in the fall of 2006. A new granite seatwall provides a place for people sit and talk after going to the post office and grocery store. New pedestrian lights enliven the town center at night. Tall grasses screen the views to parked cars and disease resistent elms and honey locusts provide shade on hot summer days.
