Woburn, Ma

The Anderson Regional Transportation Center in Woburn replaces the
Mishewam commuter rail/ Logan Express station and provides a much-needed, expanded and streamlined
facility for this busy commuter suburb of Boston. The 34-acre facility is part of a 250-acre former industrial park, which had been one of the nation’s top ten toxic waste sites. Cleaning and redeveloping the area was part of the EPA’s Superfund program. The Center was named in honor of Jimmy Anderson, whose death from leukemia in 1981 was the subject of the book and movie titled “A Civil Action.”

Brown, Richardson & Rowe’s landscape design focuses on the pedestrian areas around the station and the entrance drive. Trees were placed to draw attention to the Center. Materials were chosen to be attractive and durable. Small-leaved tree species were
selected to minimize fall cleanup.
Hardy groundcovers, bulb plantings,
and low, turf-type lawn fescues
minimize mowing but still provide a “green” look.
