East Boston, MA

The 41.5-acre Bremen Street and Memorial Stadium Parks are Big Dig mitigation projects. Brown, Richardson & Rowe, Inc., as final designer, worked with the East Boston community and with City and State agencies to complete the design of the two parks.

18.5 acre Bremen Street Park opened in 2007. It replaces the 1500 car Park'n Fly Lot next to Logan Airport. Four blocks long and filled with first class amenities, this new public space has changed not only the lives of the people in the adjacent neighborhoods, but also the available recreational opportunities throughout this community. Bremen Street Park includes playgrounds, a generously-scaled, multi-purpose spray pool, large open lawns, community gardens, a performance amphitheater, restrooms and restoration of the historic WPA Belgian block wall. Brown, Richardson & Rowe collaborated with an artist to incorporate expressions of local history, both in a free-standing sculptural piece and through adaptations of artist-inspired forms in park elements. The planting plan includes an "elm walk" to foster remembrance of the great elm allees of the much-loved Wood Island Park, designed by Olmsted.

The Community Gardens won the "Rookie Garden of the Year" award in 2008, its first full year of operation. Zumix youth musicians perform in concerts in the amphitheatre. Zumix was founded in 1991 in response to a record number of youth homicides in the late 1980's. The guiding principle is that "every child needs something to feel passionate about and for many teens, their passion is music."

The East Boston YMCA occupies a 19th century brick Boston & Albany Engine House in the park.It provides 1500 children, youths and families with a range of programs and benefits the park by attracting people throughout the day and night.

The park is one of six finalists in the Urban Land Institute's 2010 Amanda Burden Open Space Award.
